Judgement (or judgment[1]) is the evaluation of evidence in the making of a decision.[2][3][4] The term has three distinct uses:
- Informal and psychological – used in reference to the quality of cognitive faculties and adjudicational capabilities of particular individuals, typically called wisdom ordiscernment.
- Legal – used in the context of legal trial, to refer to a final finding, statement, or ruling, based on a considered weighing of evidence, called “adjudication“. See spelling note for further explanation.
- Religious – used in the concept of salvation to refer to the adjudication of God in determining Heaven or Hell for each and all human beings.
Here in Where-i-Live, some people believe – fervently – that the Day of Judgement is coming. On May 21, to be exact. They proclaim this, warning us unsuspecting semi-heathens, on billboards. In case you haven’t seen them, here are some samples:
i don’t know – maybe they’re all over the country, but i imagine them being more prominent in the “Bible belt.” Fascinating, isn’t it? Their certainty amazes me.
For sure, i don’t know that they’re not right. i am 99.5% sure that i’m not going up in The Rapture, so if it does happen, i’ll be left here looking foolish.
But it is that same kind of “judgement” that drives people to promote laws that reflect their own religious beliefs. They are actually trying to force science teachers to teach creationism. Trying to force doctors to give patients information that research doesn’t support.
It is, i think, the same kind of “judgement” that drives an anonymous commenter to make judgements about a blogger, based on the commenter’s own opinions and beliefs.
And not expressed as an opinion, expressed as “the truth.”
Sigh.
It’s easy to laugh about it. But ~~

It frightens me.
There were a group of people last weekend with signs, saying women’s place is in the home, doing laundry and cleaning. That we should dress modestly, be quiet in church, and so on.
If you believe those things, that’s fine, i guess. But the people holding the signs were chasing young women at a public event, telling them they were immoral for the way they were dressed.
i’m pretty sure that the lifestyle isn’t acceptable to these folks – although they’d like the submissive part, the kink wouldn’t be ok.
And i don’t have a good ending for this post. It’s just a heads up. You know, like they used to say on Hill Street Blues –
“Be careful out there…”

Best cancel the paper for 22/5 then. i was reading something the other day, about near where i am in “far away”, about how women should be quiet and respectful and….grateful……………………………. dangerous words.
I am a firm believed in “each to their own”….but i hate it when they think that because they believe something they have the right to preach it to me, and to use religious beliefs to justify ‘immoral’ behaviour.

We have those signs up here in Canada in the Outouais Region as well, I laughed so hard when I saw one driving with J. And those people who think a woman’s place is at home in the kitchen? That’s my parents >.<
And hey may 20 is my baby's 2-month! he can't live for only 2 months ya jerks!

I think those signs are every where. I saw them in San Diego last week. We have them here in Texas as well.
My thought is how are these people going to keep their credibility come May 22? As if they are concerned about credibility.

And credibility – I don’t know… I’ve read about times like this, when some group named a specific date and it didn’t pan out. I think that most of them slink back away. I hope.

I’ve not seen any of those signs but things like that really frustrate me. I think they give Christians a bad name…
I guess I should also say I don’t agree with them or their methods… in case that was unclear.

I really agree – I have some friends who are atheist and they often point out things like this and look at me like, really? You’re one of them? And I think they know better, but yes, you’re right. They’re just not very “Christian.”

1. Who are “they” and how do we stop them
B. Seriously? I couldn’t imagine a teacher accepting an answer like, “because my mom said so” from one of my children so why should my children have to accept, “because the bible says so” from a teacher.
Of course that is something that is “trying” to be done but I sure hope enough people are smart enough not to let something like that happen. We learn on Fact, beliefs are left to each individual but mass learning/teaching needs to be solely on fact.

Yes. Facts should be taught, not religious beliefs. Lets hope enough people who agree with that let their senators and reps know that’s how they feel.
Thanks for you comment, I so totally agree with you. When I would come home from school quoting some fact that seemed unlikely to my mother, she would’t accept “because my teacher said so,” she always wanted to know where the teacher got it from. So I grew up wanting cited references, not opinions.

HEHE I was just reading on Wiki about 2011 end times predictions and saw this,
“In Camping’s(the family radio prediction guy)1992 self-published book 1994? he proclaimed that the End Times would come on September 4, 1994. When the Rapture failed to occur on the appointed day, Camping said he had made a mathematical error.”
I’m pretty sure he’ll be claiming mathematical error until the day he dies.
Just when you think we’ve come so far…scientifically, morally, as a human race…you bump nose-first into someone who doesn’t embrace knowledge, openness, acceptance.
it’s easy to believe that everyone is open and accepting when all you get is support, hugs etc.
The hard truth is…the world isn’t like that.
Some people embrace truth and others denounce it as lies.
Some people accept “us” (that could be any “us”) and others shun or attempt to harm.
The truth is…everyone lives with his, her vision of truth.
And sometimes, that’s a scary place.

So it’s sometimes a shock to remember that most of the world is not like that.

Funny – yeah, I guess not being able to see the stupid billboards is a perk of sorts…
You know, I’m not really up on what’s supposed to happen after the rapture, although I’m pretty sure it’s not supposed to be fun for those of us left here. Isn’t there a book or a movie or something called Left Behind that’s about that? Yeah, I didn’t read it. Or watch it. So I don’t know.
But you’re right – and really, the more I think about it – I love that perspective! With the self-righteous and smug gone, the world would be a better place, I think.
